After the earthquake happened in Haiti,
the students in our newly formed grade 7/8 class decided that
they wanted to do something to help with the rescue and reconstruction
efforts there. Together, we decided to hold a bake sale to raise
money in support. Many students and teachers were busy baking
for the sale on Friday, January 22, and we are pleased to report
that we raised $153.50 selling our delicious
treats! All of the proceeds went to CARE, a non-profit organization.
Thank you to everyone who baked for our sale and bought our treats!

Kindergarten Registrations
Perth Road Public School is accepting registrations
for the 2010-2011 Kindergarten students.
As you may have already heard, Perth Road
Public School will be offering full-day Kindergarten for the 2010-2011
school year. The release from the
Limestone District School Board follows.
Limestone District School Board
For Immediate Release, January 12, 2010
LDSB will offer full-day learning at 8 schools
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Starting in September 2010, the Limestone District
School Board (LDSB) will begin phasing-in full-day learning for
four and five-year olds in selected schools. The LDSB will be
offering all-day learning for junior and senior kindergarten students
in 8 schools across the district for the 2010-2011 school year.
A recommended list of schools for implementation in the first
year of the five year phase-in was submitted to the Ministry of
Education in November, following collaboration with representatives
from the co-terminus school boards, municipalities, and early
childhood agencies.
Based on projected enrolment, the Ministry of
Education approved a total of 14 full-day early learning classes
for the 4-and 5-year old children from the catchment areas of
the following schools:
North Addington Education Centre, Cloyne - one
classroom
Sharbot Lake Public School, Sharbot Lake - one classroom
Prince Charles Public School, Verona - two classrooms
Westdale Park Public School, Napanee - three classrooms
Perth Road Public School, Perth Road - two classrooms
First Avenue Public School, Kingston - two classrooms
Frontenac Public School, Kingston - two classrooms
Centreville Public School, Centreville - one classroom
Teachers and Early Learning Program Instructors
with Early Childhood Education (ECE) qualifications will work
together during the regular school day to help young students
learn and grow in developmentally appropriate and stimulating
environments.
The LDSB has long recognized the importance of
early learning, and has funded full-day senior kindergarten programs
in five of its schools since 1998. "We strongly believe that
full-day early learning programs are key to ensuring that the
foundations for success are in place for all of our students,"
says Brenda Hunter, Director of Education. "Full-time early
learning programs for our kindergarten aged pupils will enhance
pupil readiness, including in literacy and numeracy, will enable
a smooth transition to Grade 1, and prepare students to be effective
learners throughout their educational journey."
As well, the LDSB will continue to work with
our community partners to facilitate the establishment of new
before and after school care programs at these schools staffed
by the same qualified professionals who will work with the children
during the school day program. Dr. Charles Pascal, the government's
special advisor on early learning, says children will benefit
from a seamless educational experience throughout the day, that
extends to before and after regular school hours, if parents chose
that option. There will be a fee for the before and after school
care programs if families wish to enroll, and where there is sufficient
registration. The provincial government will offer subsidies for
some families, based on financial need. More information about
these before and after school care programs for 4-and 5-year olds
will be available shortly.
There were a number of factors considered by
school boards and the government in order to determine where full-day
learning programs would first be offered, including:
• availability of space
• community need
• existing child-care programs – availability of reasonably priced
child care and before and
after school care programming
• student achievement
The Ontario government has committed to the introduction
of fulltime early learning programs in every school by 2015-16.
John Gerretsen, MPP, Kingston and the Islands concludes, “Full-day
early learning will give children greater opportunities for success
in life. It is a key part of the government’s plan to build a
well-educated workforce.”

Perth Road
Public School provides inclusive, positive and stimulating learning
opportunities. Children are inspired to become life-long
learners and responsible citizens in a safe and accepting environment
that meets the unique needs of individuals.

I hope everyone had a relaxing Christmas holiday. Students have
been enjoying the outdoors during recess and we are trying to
balance the fun activities with a safe environment. Many of the
things that students do off school property are not permitted
while on school property because of the safety factor. These include
such things as throwing snowballs and playing King of the Hill.
Students are aware of the rules and the majority are respectful
of the rules. Thanks to your support and guidance at home, we
have very few issues on the yard with safety.
Our Christmas Basket campaign was another great success this
year. Families who received support were very appreciative. A
big thank you to everyone who donated food items throughout the
month of December. Again, this shows how caring our school community
is.
Finally, I would like to inform you of two new staff members
who have joined us as of January. We have Mr. Matt Drechsler,
who is teaching Grade 5/6 while Ms. Olive is away. We also have
Ms. Carolyn de Groot, who is replacing Ms. McQillan and providing
literacy and numeracy support in our Intermediate division. We
anticipate another good year at Perth Road P.S. and thank you
for all you do to make our school such a great place.
