Two coaches will be providing skill development workshops for our junior student focusing on developing the individual athlete’s skills on court rather than playing games for the entirety of their time in the gym. This means that every athlete has a ball in their hands during the entirety of the workshop allowing for the best athlete experience - building confidence within each child themselves and developing a love for the sport. Junior classes will participate in a 50 minute workshop in the middle or end of the day. </span></p><h2 class="editor-heading-h2" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Head Lice</span></h2><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">There have been recent incidents of head lice at our school. Head lice infestations are common in school-aged children.&nbsp;</span><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Having head lice is not a health hazard, nor will it transmit disease, but it does require that treatment be given immediately to stop the spread to other children or adults.</strong></b></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">It is recommended that you check your child’s head regularly (every day is ideal) for signs of head lice and/or nits.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Here's what we are doing at the school to minimize the spread of head lice at school:</span></p><ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">removing unnecessary fabric items from impacted classroom</span></li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">discouraging the shared use of headphones</span></li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">spreading out students personal belongings as much as possible in the coat hook areas</span></li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">discouraging the sharing of hats, brushes, etc.</span></li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">daily vacuuming of classroom carpets</span></li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">bagging of the lost and found items</span></li><li value="7" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">student head checks when more than one case is identified in a classroom</span></li><li value="8" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">communication to families regarding identified instances of head lice in their child's classroom</span></li><li value="9" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">communication and educational resources to support families manage infestations</span></li></ul><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Should your child become infested with head lice and/or nits, it is extremely important that you administer treatment immediately, and that you check all family members and to treat anyone who is found to have head lice. It is also important to notify the school and others (family members, neighbours, friends etc.) who may have come into contact with the child who has head lice. Close head-to-head contact should be discouraged pending treatment.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">As long as children are in treatment, they are welcome at school. Current research supported by the KFL&amp;A Public Health and the Canadian Pediatric Society shows that exclusion from school and daycare due to the detection of the presence of nits does not have sound medical rationale. Exclusion, early dismissal and no-nit policies do not prevent or control head lice infestations and are discouraged by public health authorities and the Canadian Pediatric Society.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Although head lice is not associated with serious disease, repeated episodes can be costly, time consuming and frustrating.&nbsp;</span><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">If parents have health benefits, often lice treatments are covered. If someone does not have private insurance coverage, OHIP will cover the cost of certain treatments.&nbsp;</strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">It would be a good idea to discuss treatment options with your pharmacist as they would know which treatments are covered by OHIP.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We must work together so that we can stop the spread. Please let the school know if your child has a confirmed case of head lice.&nbsp;</span><i><b><strong class="editor-text-bold editor-text-italic" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school directly by phone or email so we can support as needed.</strong></b></i></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">For information on what to look for and how to treat lice, please visit the link below. A Message from Southeast Public Health

<p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Dear Families,</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">We are sharing the following letter from Southeast Public Health, which contains important information for families:</span></p><hr><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Dear parents, guardians and staff:</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">RE: First Influenza A Confirmed Case of the Season</strong></b></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Please be advised that Southeast Public Health (SEPH) has received laboratory confirmation of the first case of influenza A for the </span><b><strong class="editor-text-bold" style="white-space: pre-wrap;">2025-2026 </strong></b><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">season. We are providing this information so that you will be able to take steps to ensure the best protection possible for yourself and your family.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Influenza causes mild to severe illness and can lead to serious health complications, even in healthy children and adults. Immunization is the best way to prevent influenza; even in years when there is a strain mismatch, the flu vaccine will still offer some protection. The influenza vaccine (flu shot) is available free of charge to anyone who lives, works or goes to school in Ontario who is 6 months of age and over. Contact your health-care provider or local pharmacy for your influenza vaccine if your family has not yet been immunized. For children under 5 years of age who cannot receive their immunization from their health-care provider, </span><a href="https://southeastph.ca/health-topics/respiratory-season-vaccines/" class="editor-link"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Southeast Public Health is offering clinics</span></a><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">Next to immunization, the single most important way to prevent the spread of infection is to clean hands often with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers should only be used for children if they are assisted and should be stored out of reach of young children.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">The symptoms of influenza include:</span></p><ul class="editor-list-ul"><li value="1" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">fever (greater than 38.0°C/100.4 °F)</span></li><li value="2" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">dry cough</span></li><li value="3" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">chills</span></li><li value="4" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">headache</span></li><li value="5" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">muscle aches</span></li><li value="6" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">loss of appetite</span></li><li value="7" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">sore throat</span></li><li value="8" class="editor-listitem"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">runny nose</span></li></ul><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">&nbsp;Young children may also experience nausea and vomiting with the above symptoms.</span></p><p class="editor-paragraph" dir="ltr"><span style="white-space: pre-wrap;">If your child is feeling unwell, please keep them home until they are fever-free and their symptoms have improved for at least 24 hours (or 48 hours if they’ve had vomiting or diarrhea). When your child returns to school, we encourage them to wear a well-fitting mask for 10 days from when their symptoms started to help keep others healthy.
